What is the Third Eye

The third eye is where truth lies, and where all that is untrue dies and disappears. Nothing false can live in the light of pure wisdom. The third eye is the seat of discernment and discrimination.

Through the window of your eyes, you can view the ever-changing landscape of your beauteous, miraculous world. You perceive this magnificent world with your five senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and feeling.

But there is a sixth sense. With this sixth, higher sense perception, you can open the gateway to subtler realms of existence. You can develop an inner eye and view an invisible world, consisting of multiple dimensions, alternate realities, subtle planes, spiritual worlds filled with light, and parallel universe of indescribable wonders. This eye of wisdom, knowledge, illumination, and intuition is aptly name “the third eye”.  (pg 14)

Third Eye in religion

Throughout the ancient and modern world, this third eye seated in the pineal gland has been named “divine eye” “all-seeing eye”, “mind’s eye”, “eye of the soul”, “inner eye”, “eye of illumination”, “eye of Wisdom”, “Eye of Horus”, “eye of providence”, “eye of God”, “sixth chakra”, “ajna chakra” and “brow chakra”.

This gland, somewhat of a mystery to modern allopathic medicine, is well known to Ayurvedic medicine of India; to Chinese medicine; to Druidic, Judaic, Islamic, Taoist, Mayan, Tibetan, Aboriginal, and other cultures and to the ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Assyria, Babylonia, Greece, Rome, and Mesoamerica. P14

Third eye in Greek Literature

The ancient Greeks believed the pineal gland to be the entrance to the realms of thought. Plato (circa 428BC-348BC) and Hippocrates (circa 460BC-377BC) believed the third eye (enkephalos) to be the “eye of wisdom”. Plato viewed the chakras as subtle organs through which the soul (psyche) communicates with the physical body. He thought the marrow or cerebrospinal fluid to be the essence of the soul, and that the chakras emanated spiritual energy by means of this spiritual sap, which he called “radical moisture”. He saw the third eye as the controlling center for all the chakras.  P31

Yoga – The third eye and Kundalini

In India this third eye is known as ajna chakra. Ajna means “command center” and is situated in the glands that regulate the entire endocrine systems, including the pineal gland and hypothalamus. Asjna is the center of sukshma prakriti (primordial power of everything) and atman (“I AM” self).  Its form is a triangle with two petals with Sanskrit letters ham and ksham.  Its mantral is OM, and its deity is Paramashiva (Shambu) p 93

Swami Hariananda, author of Yoga and the Portal, states that meditation and pranayama can awaken the vital force, kundalini Shakti, at the base chakra. Kundalini moves up through the sushumna nadi where you neutralize the polarizing effects of ida and pingala nadis. When Shakti reaches the head, it stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands to secrete hormones. The pineal secretes a white, milky fluid, and the pituitary secretes a yellowish, creamy fluid.  When the two fluids meet, there is a flash of light so bright that the third eye (“Star of Bethlehem”) opens.

Then the two fluids, known as the land of Milk and Honey in Biblical terms, begin to flow down the pancreatic nerve (the holy river to Jordan) to the third energy center (navel chakra), which is known as the manager, where Christ consciousness is born within you. This potent state of consciousnesses illuminates your entire body. This light energy is lifted to the top of the head, where you unite with God. P94

The Three Dantian – Upper Dan Tien

In the ancient tradition of the Far East, the chakras are viewed as the essential elements of the subtle energy field. The third eye is known as the upper dantian to the Taoist of China. Nearly every spiritual traditions three major subtle energy centers along the central median channel run through the spine in the subtle body. According to the Taoists, these three centers are spiritual transformers.

The three dantians of ancient Taoist philosophy are situated along the Tai Chi (known as sushmna nadi in India) in the area of the sacral chakra, heart chakra, and third eye chakra. The Tai Chi extends from baihui acupuncture point (named bindu point in India) down to the huiyi point at the perineum (named mula kshetram in India).

The three dantians gather, store, transform, and project life force energy. Their purpose is to facilitate alchemical energy changes in your subtle body. The Tain Chi pole enables communication among the three dantians and facilitates flow of life force energy.  P 145-146.

Upper dantian is the generator and storehouse of heavenly qi, which is subtle, ethereal, and vapor-like. Opening the upper dantian (known as “crystal room”) awakens supersensory perception, spiritual intuition, higher awareness, and perceptions outside time and space. Qi has yang (vs. ying) energy.

What does the Bible say about a sixth sense / third eye?

The great yogi Paramahansa Yogananda believed that Jesus taught methods of yoga and the deeper mysteries to the closest disciples who were ready to receive them. In The Second Coming of the Christ, Yogananda described the seven major chakras, and the light of consciousness in the third eye:

“Man’s body, unique among all creatures, possesses spiritual cerebrospinal centers of divine consciousness in which the descended Spirit is templed. These are known to the yogis, and to Saint John- who described them in Revelation as the seven seals, and as seven stars and seven churches, with their seven angels and seven golden candlesticks. When one it baptized by immersion in the light of Spirit, the microcosmic spiritual eye in the body may be seen in its relation to the light of the descending Spirit as the Cosmic Trinity

The seven centers are divinely planned exits or “trap doors” through which the soul has descended into the body and through which must rescind by a process of meditation. By seven successive steps, the soul escapes into Cosmic Consciousness”. Parmashansa Yogananda, The Second coming of the Christ, Volume 1, p87

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye can be single, the whole body shall be full of light” – Jesus Christ, Matthew 6:22

Where is the third Eye located? – Pineal Gland

In India this third eye is known as ajna chakra, a subtle energy plexus in the center of your brain, seated in the pineal gland. The ajna charka is not in your physical body. If you were to dissect a cadaver, you would not find it anywhere. It is located in your subtle body. P14

Approximately the size of a raisin, its frequent calcifications (“brain sand”) make it easily recognizable in brain X-rays. This endocrine gland rests in the back of the eyes, behind the third cerebral ventricle in the midline (between the two cerebral hemispheres) of the brain. It is located in the geometric center of your cranium, near the entrance to the cerebral aqueduct, which connects the brain’s third and fourth ventricles. As part of the epithalamus, between the two hemispheres, it rests in a groove where the two halves of the thalamus join.  P51

Third Eye Pineal Gland

What function does pineal serve?

The pineal is considered a “master” gland because it regulates bodily cycles, stimulates the production of many hormones, and controls the glands. Your endocrine system consists of glands that secrete hormones directly into the porous capillaries of your body.

  • 14:09 What is the function of the third eye? The 3rd eye is the center of your spiritual self. It is the center of illumination that communicates with divine beings.

How does one see through their third eye?

The mechanism of sight, according to science, is a marriage between the object of perception, your two eyes, and your brain. It is believed that the mechanism of inner sight (insight or intuition) uses an inner third eye, seated in the pineal gland. Opening the Third Eye. P14

Why Develop your Third Eye?

There are untold benefits to exploring your third eye. This eye of wisdom and intuition is literally your inner teacher. In India, the planet Jupiter, associated with the third eye, is called Guru, which can be translated to “Spiritual preceptor” or “teacher”.  Therefore, by awakening and developing your third eye, you are opening lines of communication between your ego self and your higher self.

What are the benefits of having an inner Guru?

In one word: Miracles! When you open the eye of inner wisdom, you begin the flow of divine guidance. Learn how to perceive that flow, allow it, trust it, learn how to test whether it is real, and then follow the true inner guidance you receive. Miracles will begin to happen everywhere, in every part of your life.

The third eye is the illumination, which shines the light of wisdom upon your pathway. It is the wayshower, the beacon that guides you to your true destination- the home you have been longing for. It is the lighthouse of consciousness, which truth-seekers everywhere long to attain. Seated in that treasure trove is your inner wisdom, the very essence and source of your true self. There you come home to the place of perfect peace, divine understanding, inner joy, fulfillment, and utter contentment. p15

What are the benefits of opening up your third eye?

  • Greater confidence as you discover your true purpose
  • Greater wisdom as you tap into the source of all wisdom.
  • Access to inner counselors who will guide you on your path
  • The ability to make decisions effortlessly, with commitment, clarity, certainty, and assurance.

Opening up using Taoist meditation

The three dantians are vital centers for energy cultivation, diagnosis, and healing. The health and strength of your energy field depends on the amount of qi (life energy) present in the three dantians.

When you place focused attention on increasing qi energy in the lower dantian, the result is an elevated feeling of power and stability. Focusing intention to increase qi in the middle dantian will heighten emotional awareness. Focus on increasing qi in the upper dantian to enhance spiritual awareness and connection to your higher self.

The “microcosmic orbit” or “self-winding wheel of the law”, a practice originating in India, is a circuit used in Taoist meditation. This method circulates and refines the qi via a circuit from perineum up to head, and then from head back down to perineum.

Yoga- Sun and Moon Breaths

Hatha Yoga uses pranayama to optimize prana in breath. The Sanskrit word hatha means solar and lunar breaths, which refers to the major nadis, ida an pingala. These run alongside sushmna nadi at the brain. Ida emanates from the left side of kanda mula (root bulb) at the base of your spine and ends at the left side of ajna chakra (third eye). Pingala begins at the right side of root bulb and ends up at the right side of ajna chakra.

Unless kundalini is somehow awakened, prana normally only flows through ida and pingala. However, pranayama can force prana to withdraw from ida and pingala, open sushmna nadi, flow into it, and travel us the spine, awakening kundalini.

Ida, the left nadi, represents the female, moon, and your subjective nature.  Connected to breath flowing through your left nostril, it operates the parasympathetic area of your autonomic nervous system. The right nadi, symbolizes the male, sun, and your objective side, and operates the sympathetic area of your autonomic nervous system.

For optimum health, the energies governed by ida and pingala must be balanced. Too much objectivity, dynamism, and physical activities stress the body beyond its limits. Too much subjectivity, passivity, thought, and internal brooding can cause neurosis, depression, even insanity.

Ida and pingala nadis represent time and duality, but sushumna nadi devours time and leads to oneness in timeless eternity. Thus ida and pingala bind you to material life, while sushumna is the path to freedom (moksha), full integration, and balance. Through pranayama and meditation, when ida and pingala become balanced and prana enters sushumna, you enter the timeless state.

Yogic alternative breathing, anuloma viloma pranayama

Yogic alternative breathing, anuloma viloma pranayama, equalizes sun and moon breaths. By breathing through one nostril and out the other, you will create equilibrium in your body metabolism and purify your nadis. Purification of your nadis awakens your third eye.
