Guru Practice Gone Bad
Cj Liu interviews author Renee Linnell about her book “The Burn Zone”. Renee shares her story about her experience being part of a cult for 5 years. She explains the warning signs of being part of a cult when they asked her for an empowerment fee. Despite these red flags she continues being part of the group due to her incredible spiritual experiences and her guru’s advice that resulted in her learning new things (computer programming). Her family life and her desire to find love outside herself were drivers for this kind of guru and sangha practice which made her stay even when her boundaries were crossed. CJ shares the family connections she felt with her teacher as a cautionary tale on giving away your power. Renee shares another red glad when she was asked to be a consort to one of the leaders in the practice. In retrospect, Renee and CJ discuss whether teachers who are flawed humans can ever be a true channel of Divine Light. According to her gurus, her intuition to leave was overridden by message from her teacher that intuition was your ego and part of the occult. We discuss the occult, and how belief in dark forces create that reality. Along with the occult, the idea of negating your ego, Renee shares other strategies the cult used to cut her from her past, her family and friends.
