Happiness
Part 3 of 3: THE Best Way to Deal with Stress, Anger, Guilt
CJ Liu interviews Randy Taran, the Founder of Project Happiness and author of Emotional Advantage: Embracing All Your Feelings to Create a Life You Love.
Since launching the Happiness Project social media sites, Taran has received many questions about stress and anxiety and how to manage it. There are four emotions her community commonly struggles with. These are anger, guilt, shame, and anxiety. Taran shares that people commonly deal with these emotions in three ways:
- Repressing or suppressing anger
- Exploding into emotional outbursts
- “Naming and Taming” it
The “Naming and Taming” approach comes from Dr. Dan Siegel. Dr. Siegel is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School. Taran briefly explains the key ideas in this healthy approach to expressing our negative emotions.
Next, CJ and Taran discuss a common questions. How can we relate to our emotions differently? Often times we see emotions as something to run away from. Instead, we learn how to embrace them as “energy in motion.” These emotions convey important information, informing us about our needs and creating protection and safety.
Taran then shares that emotional expression has a range from healthy passion to unhelpful obsession. She explains how emotions such as anger, guilt, and stress express on this continuum. She will also help you identify if you have tipped the scales into an unhealthy expression of a negative emotion.
