Sacred Sexuality and Awakening
CJ Liu interviews KamalaDevi McClure about her book “Sex Shamans: True Stories of Sacred Sexuality and Awakening.”
Part 1: Spiritual Awakening Through Sex
KamalaDevi (KD) shares that there are many ways for us to get into an ecstatic state where spiritual awakening takes place. Breathing, dancing, and psychedelic drugs are all practices, like love making, that allow us to merge, heal, and see God. In these practices, we bring our souls into ourselves and become embodied. During these experiences we learn that everything; our bodies, our attraction to another, etc. are all interactions with something holy.
Part 2: Life Energy = Sexual Energy
KamalaDevi (KD) shares that we have life energy coursing through our bodies. There is incredible creativity and power that comes through connecting with this life energy. There are many practices that cultivate tapping into our consciousness and higher powers (e.g.- chakras 5, 6, 7). However, we often erroneously dismiss the power of connecting with the lower chakras (e.g.- chakra 1,2, 3).
CJ shares her experiences of being disembodied during her walk during the Camino, where she walked in community in nature. KD’s son (Devin) also walked the Camino around the same time as a rite of passage. CJ was allowing nature to lead her through her experience as an empty-nester, while Devin was learning about becoming a man. KD shares that nature can illuminate or bring about the healing we need to address shame, guilt, fear, and sexual trauma.
Part 3: What is a Sexual Shaman?
KamalaDevi (KD) shares her initial experiences as a yoga teacher where her students asked her questions about sex. Through reading “Women of the Light: The New Sacred Prostitute” by Kenneth Stubs, KD found answers. In creating her own book, KD paid homage to Kenneth’s format of telling personal stories of sexual shamans. KD explains that the book doesn’t identify common sexual problems because each person’s issues are unique.
However, KD shares a common framework she uses in diagnosing where the root of a sexual problem is. Often it is due to a soul issue or centering issue. CJ asks KD what someone should be looking for and things to avoid in finding a sexual shaman. KD explains that she doesn’t offer any checklists or advice, but just asks that the client intuitively feel if they trust their shaman to be a guide. CJ asks for KD to share an example of an exercise that one can try at home. KD offers a tool for sexual divination.
Part 4: What is Polyamory & Open Relationships?
KamalaDevi (KD) shares how she entered into an open relationship twenty years ago, when polyamory was not widely known about. Now, her 13 year old son Devin has conversations with her about his sexual preferences. KD shares the geometry of polyamorous relationships and how her husband and she have a rectangular relationship with another couple. KD describes her relationships as a superpod.
CJ asks what it’s like for a child who has parents that are part of a superpod. KD explains that polyamory is not for everyone. She goes on to say it’s about the shape of your heart. If you are a person who loves many people, values them, and feels your fullest expression is through multiple partnerships, then it’s a good fit. However, if you are just bored with your sex life, want to spice up your sex life, or have been cheating on your partner , then this may be a challenging path.
